Par 3 Course Layout
Orchard Golf Center’s layout only has a few trees on the fairways, which is good for beginners. I suggest that a beginner only play the front nine. On back nine, you have to go over a water hazard on holes 11, 12, and 15. You have to hit a high flop shot on hole 15. There are reeds in your line of sight to the flag.
Par 3 Course Conditions
I visited Orchard Golf Center in early October. It was dry, so the ball carried with a good ball. The tee boxes were poorly maintained mostly dirt and pits. The greens on the hand were in excellent shape with a smooth roll. Gameplay was about 45 minutes for the front 9, while it took about 70 minutes for the back nine.
The back nine wasn’t that bad since there were several benches. The benches weren’t comfortable but were a welcome relaxing spot after the long walk. Holes 11 and 12 are 230 yards each. If you decide to go, be proper to walk, I walked 8,000 steps on my 18-hole round.
Facilities & Amenities
Orchard Golf Center, unlike most Par 3 courses, has a pro shop. It has everything from golf bags to hats and a large selection of clubs. Now don’t go there hungry and think you are getting anything more than a microwaved hotdog, some chips, and a drink.
The driving range has 20 outdoor mats. They are spaced out enough to hit balls without rubbing the next golfer’s shoulders. Orchard Golf Course also has 8 covered stalls to avoid the sun.
When you arrive at Orchard Golf Center, take your clubs with you. I went through the pro shop. There was a sign that said not to bring your clubs inside, but when I went to pay, the lady at the counter was rude.
She didn’t allow me to pay until I went outside to the car and returned with my clubs. People sometimes want to share clubs instead of renting a set. But overall, the staff was friendly even the lady I thought was initially rude.
Final Thoughts
Orchard Golf Center is a solid choice for those looking for an affordable, laid-back round of golf near Indianapolis. It’s good for intermediate players who want a challenge. The front nine is beginner-friendly, but the back nine will test your skills with its longer holes and water hazards.
While the greens are in great condition and provide a smooth roll, the tee boxes leave much to be desired, so adjust your expectations accordingly. Be prepared for a workout, as it’s a fully walkable course with pull carts only.
If you’re tackling all 18 holes, take advantage of the benches on the back nine to catch your breath. If you don’t mind a bit of wear and tear or a walk-heavy round, grab your clubs (but leave them outside. If you like some more great Indy Par 3 Courses, I’ll see you at Hole 19.
