Which Indianapolis Golf Course is Right for You
If you’re anything like me, your ideal golf day is budget-friendly, challenging, and still leaves time for lunch afterward! That’s why today, we’re starting with the differences between Par 3 and Pitch & Putt courses, helping you decide which one is right for your game. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer, a weekend warrior, or a beginner just looking to get out and have fun, this guide will help you pick the best type of course for you and your skill level.
What’s a Par 3 Golf Course, Anyway
Par 3 courses are all about shorter holes where every shot is important. The goal is to reach the green in just one shot and then putting your way to a low score. Holes on a Par 3 course usually range from 50 to 200 yards, but in Indianapolis go up to 240 yards. You have to focus on the accuracy of your shot more than power. Think of it as a course that takes the long walks out of golf, and keeps the focus on par.
Pros of Indianapolis Par 3 Golf Courses:
- Save Time: Most Par 3 rounds take 1-1.5 hours, which is perfect for those on a budget or a tight schedule.
- Great for Beginners with a Few Skills: Par 3 courses are ideal if you’re just beginning or working on your short game.
- Affordable: In many cases, Par 3 courses are cheaper than regular 18-hole courses. A round of Indianapolis Par costs $15-$25, and an additional $8-$10 for a cart.
Where to Play Par 3 Golf in Indianapolis
If you’re itching to play a Par 3 course, Indy has some affordable and beginner-friendly choices with holes that challenge without overwhelming.
- Riverside Golf Academy
- Eagle Dune Golf Course
- Orchard Golf Center Stony Creek Golf Course – Noblesville
What’s Pitch & Putt
Pitch & Putt courses are shorter than Par 3s, typically designed with holes under 100 yards. If you’re thinking about mini-golf with the windmills, you’re totally wrong. Pitch & Putt focuses on practicing your approach shots and putting, so you don’t have to lug your whole set of clubs around. All you need are a 7-iron, pitching, and sand wedge or putter.
Pros of Indianapolis Pitch & Putt Golf Courses:
- Super Quick Rounds: A Pitch & Putt round can take less than an hour, making it a quick golf fix choice.
- Perfect for All Ages & Skill Levels: Pitch & Putt courses are usually flat, walkable, and fun for kids and adults trying to play golf for the first time.
- Budget-Friendly: These courses are affordable and you can play all day for half the price of a regular 18-hole course round. Great for a family outing or a casual round with friends.
Is Par 3 or Pitch & Putt Golf Courses Right for You?
- For the Beginners: Start with Pitch & Putt. It allows you to work on your fundamental skills. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, graduate to a Par 3 course to build your short-game confidence.
- For the Golfer Short on Time: Pitch & Putt gets you in and out in no time. If you’ve got more room in your schedule, a Par 3 course gives you a real golf experience without undertaking a full 18-hole.
- For Families & Groups: Pitch & Putt and Par 3 are both choices, especially if you’re out with kids or beginners. The shorter holes mean everyone stays involved, and you don’t have to be a pro to eagle a hole.
- For Skill Sharpeners: For those needing to improve their short game, Par 3 is where it’s at. It challenges your shot placement, club selection, and focus. Pitch & Putt is good close-range shots only. Both are valuable for different skills!
Where to Play Pitch & Putt in Indianapolis
Pitch & Putt courses are a bit harder to find around here. Indianapolis only had one true spot, Shortee’s Golf, but unfortunately closed. For those who had the chance to play there, Shortee’s Golf was an ok course. It was similar to Riverside Golf Academy. But if you get the golf bug, you should try one of Indianapolis’s Par 3 or a 9-hole golf course.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re aiming for a birdie or just a day out, both Par 3 and Pitch & Putt courses make excellent choices. Just remember, Indianapolis has more 9-hole courses than Par 3 or Pitch & Putt, which gives you budget-friendly options to explore. The key is picking the course that best matches your skill level, time, and goals. So grab your clubs, rally some friends, and get out there!
